The University Libraries and the School of Social Work invite you to an insightful talk by Shweta Singh, PhD, Associate Professor in the School of Social Work on the topic of empowerment and women focusing on the Indian Subcontinent. India is a fast-emerging economy and remains a complex cultural experience even without adding gender to the mix. Women become increasingly important to the growth development trajectory of emerging economies. The large number of Indian women in Chicago and in the U.S. makes their empowerment both locally, nationally, and globally relevant. Dr. Singh will cover topics on social values, economic status, mental and physical health, and well-being of women. She will also read excerpts from her play and novel.

Shweta Singh (B.A., M.S.W.; L.S.W., Ph.D.) is an Associate Professor in the School of Social Work at Loyola University Chicago. She is also the Director of the Certificate Program in Empowering Women. She has a Doctorate in Social Work from The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, USA. She has done her Masters in Social Work from the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), Mumbai, India and Bachelor of Arts from Isabella Thoburn (I.T.) College Lucknow, India. She also has certifications in Yoga, Mediation, and Life Coaching.  Her area of research and scholarship is on women and wellbeing, empowerment, work, education, and parenting.  She focuses on women belonging to Indian, Indian Subcontinent, and South Asian cultures. She is a practitioner of Hindu religion and spirituality-based meditation, like kundalini meditation. She has also authored a novel and plays. She is also a trainee mental health therapist.
